Creating Permanent Forest Estates (Sri Lanka)

Introduction

Last updated: 20 August, 2012

The main objective of creating PFEs is to maintain an optimum forest cover which ensures sustainable services in environment, social and economic spheres. These PFEs are to be categorized into various forest management categories depending on the objectives of management. It is also proposed to manage all the forest areas scientifically through appropriate forestry management plans with the participation of local communities wherever possible. A part of the functions related to establishment of PFE has already been completed and about 40% of the forest areas have been surveyed and demarcated under the Forest Resource Management Project (FRMP) funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) from 2001-07. A part of the balance area is proposed to be completed under REDD+ national programme from 2011-13. This is to be done on priority basis in most environmentally vulnerable areas. Survey and demarcation of 3-4 priority natural forests in districts of Ratnapura, Kalutara, Matara and Nuwara Eliya has been proposed.
