Conservation and Low-carbon Development: Opportunities and Strategies

Patricipants in this session will be able to:
1. Understand “Business-as-usual” development pathways,
carbon emissions, and conservation.
2. Define what a low-carbon development (LCD)
plan is.
3. Express the international contexts in which LCD
plans play a role.
4. Understand the role that conservation has played in
proposed LCD plan for one or more developing country examples.
5. Determine the
opportunities and risks that LCD presents to developing countries.
Session Description:
In this session, participants will explore the role of low-carbon development planning in international climate regimes and climate/development funding transfers from north to south. Participants will examine the low-carbon development plans of 3-4 example nations – Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, and Guyana – in key international contexts, hearing directly from experts on both the sides of the planning process. Finally, participants will explore the opportunities and challenges presented to developing countries by shifting to low-carbon development and including conservation and REDD within LCD plans.
