Session Objective:

Participants in this session will be able to:

1.  Understand the current legal, policy and institutional frameworks governing  REDD+ in Indonesia.
2. Appreciate the challenges of/opportunities for  implementing LCD/REDD+  at the sub-national level.
3.  Cite emerging practices in terms of specific emission reduction strategies and finance/benefit distribution mechanisms.

Session Description:

Indonesia is the third largest emitter of global greenhouse gases (GHG) after China and the US.  Approximately 80% of its emissions are caused by deforestation, forest degradation and associated land-use change.  At the September 2009 G20 meeting the Government of Indonesia committed to reducing GHG emissions by 26%, and potentially 41%, by 2030.  While high level political support is essential to achieving such targets, implementation will require fundamental changes in the national development strategy.  This session is designed to familiarize participants with the pathway  towards low carbon development being pursued by the Government of Indonesia and the specific steps taken since the development of the Bali Roadmap in 2007, highlight the challenges ahead, profile some of the most promising approaches being undertaken by government, the private sector and NGOs, and, identify areas for further investment.
