Press Conference: Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Basin
The Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (F&ES), the Coordinator for the Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) are pleased to invite you to a press conference that takes a close look at the project “Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Basin.” The IDB-funded project aims to build the capacity of indigenous leaders and communities to represent themselves in national, regional, and international climate change discussions. It will also provide technical assistance to these stakeholders in order to prepare them to better understand and manage the implications, potential impacts and opportunities of the REDD+ mechanism.
IDB is providing financial and technical support through its Gender and Diversity Division. This year, students at Yale F&ES have conducted research on the project to provide analytical guidance on the project’s components and where it fits in to the broader advancement of REDD+. This guidance is meant to address history, potential risks, realities, and previous experiences in REDD+ in order to offer useful recommendations for COICA and IDB as they implement this project.
The press conference will provide details on the collaborative effort by presenting the project’s main objectives, the roles and perspectives of each stakeholder, initial research findings, and will allow time for questions and answers.
