Foundation for the Development and Protection of the Nizaíto River Basin in Paraíso (FUNDERPROCUNIPA)
Created in the town of Paraiso, Barahona, Dominican Republic on July 4, 1995, as a result of deforestation and confrontation that existed between farmers who cultivate land to support their families and members of the Forestry Department to preserve natural resources, it is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that depends on funding from national and international donors.that brings together 28 associations of farmers, 13 women's associations and youth groups, 3 ecological societies, 2 vendors' associations and fishermen's association.
Among its objectives are:
- To coordinate the work of the institutions and organizations that work in the river Nizaíto's watershed, and so to promote the sustainable human development in our region.
- To promote the protection of rivers and forests and to recuperate those areas in the watershed that have been deforested, and to protect so the environment.
- To develop educational plans relating to the rational use of forests, watersheds, sustainable human development, and to get a more dignified lifehood in this poor region, in harmony with nature.
