Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Mexico)
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales; SEMARNAT) is a Federal Government agency. Its main purpose is to protect, restore and conserve Mexico’s ecosystems and natural resources, and environmental goods and services, in order to promote their sustainable use.
SEMARNAT is the key implementing agency for REDD+ in Mexico and also presides the Interministerial Climate Change Commission (Comisión Intersecretarial de Cambio Climático, CICC). SEMARNAT contains the National Forestry Commission (Comisión Nacional Forestal, CONAFOR), the focal point of REDD+ initiatives in Mexico, as well as the Under Secretary’s Office of Environmental Planning and Policy (Subsecretaría de Planeación y Política Ambiental) which is also instrumental in the development of REDD+.
As well as the above, SEMARNAT also contains the Undersecretary of Public Works and Environmental Regulation (Subsecretaría de Fomento y Normatividad Ambiental); the Undersecretary of Management for Environmental Protection (Subsecretaría de Gestión para la Protección Ambiental); the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas); the National Water Commission (Comisión Nacional del Agua); the Mexican Institute of Water Technology (Instituto Mexicano de Tecnología del Agua); National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (Instituto Nacional de Ecología y Cambio Climatico); the Federal Attorney of Environmental Protection (Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente); and the National Commission for the Use and Knowledge of Biodiversity (Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad).
