Rainforest Alliance (Mexico)

The organization believes that the best way to keep forests standing is by ensuring that it is profitable for businesses and communities to do so. That means helping farmers, forest managers and tourism businesses understand that greater economic benefits can be obtained if ecosystems within and around their operations are protected, along with well-trained workers that enjoy safe conditions, proper sanitation, health care and housing. Once businesses meet certain environmental and social standards, the organization links them up to the global marketplace where demand for sustainable goods and services are on the rise. As Rainforest Alliance has a long record for making sustainable forestry and agriculture economically attractive to land owners and resources users, it is effectively promoting deforestation reduction and recovery from forest degradation through improved agricultural and forestry practices. The organization is developing pilot cases for selling REDD+ services in collaboration with the National Forestry Commission and the UNDP.  Furthermore, they are creating a strategy to develop REDD+ activities with certified forestry communities in collaboration with the Alianza de ejidos y Comunidades Forestales Certificadas, A.C.
